Application Guidelines for 2025 Admissions of International Graduate Students in the School of Electronic and Computer Engineering, Peking University

(Chinese-taught Program)

The School of Electronic and Computer Engineering (ECE) at Peking University was established in 2002. As part of the Shenzhen Graduate School, the School of ECE is located at the internationally top-notch campus of Peking University in Shenzhen. The school combines the academic strengths of Peking University and the thriving information industry of Shenzhen, exploring a new model for higher education by combining industry, education, and research. We offer a diverse range of academic programs, ranging from fundamental science to cutting-edge technology. Our programs include computer science and technology, integrated circuit science and engineering, and communication and information system. Our research fields include micro-/nano-electronic devices and integration, System-on-Chip (SoC) design and design methodology, integrated micro-/nano-electromechanical systems, optoelectronic devices and integration, intelligent media processing, AI for Science, intelligent robotics, network and information security, intelligent optical networks and optoelectronic chips, intelligent communication systems and network. Our goal is to cultivate high-level, multidisciplinary professionals with an international perspective.

General Information of the Program

ECE enrolls international students to study for master's degrees through the "Application + Examination" method. The majors for international graduate students include Integrated Circuit Science and Engineering, Computer Science and Technology, with full-time study mode and Chinese as the teaching language. The standard length of study for the master program is 3 years.  

Application Requirements

Applicants must meet all the following requirements:

1) Applicants must be non-Chinese citizens with a valid passport. Residents of the mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau, or Taiwan who have emigrated to other countries must provide valid passport or citizenship documents dating before April 30, 2019, along with proof of cancellation of Chinese nationality.

Note: The Exit-Entry Administration of the People’s Republic of China reserves the right to judge whether an applicant still has Chinese nationality. If applicants are deemed to hold Chinese nationality at any stage, their application, admission, registration, or even enrollment will be nullified.

2) Applicants should be healthy, both physically and psychologically, have no criminal record, and abide by Chinese laws and the regulations of Peking University.


3) Applicants for master’s degree programs must have attained a bachelor’s degree. Those who graduated from non-Chinese universities must hold a bachelor’s degree from a university accredited by the Ministry of Education of China. (Grade skipping or joining in the middle of the course is not permitted.)


4) Applicants must meet the academic and language requirements of the program to which they are applying for.

Chinese-taught Program: October 14, 2024-January 10, 2025 (Beijing Time)

Application Materials

Visit the application website (http://www.studyatpku.com), fill in the application and upload the following documents:

1) Graduation and degree certificates and degree authentication in Chinese or English. For degree certificates in other languages, applicants are required to upload both the original copy and a notarized copy in Chinese or English. Degree diplomas awarded by overseas universities must be authenticated by the Chinese Service Center for Scholarly Exchange, Ministry of Education, P. R. China (CSCSE). Degree diplomas awarded by universities in mainland China must be authenticated by the Center for Student Services and Development, Ministry of Education, P. R. China (CSSD).

Note: Applicants who graduated before 2025 must upload their degree authentication report during the application period. Applicants expected to graduate in 2025 must provide an official letter from their current university stating their expected graduation date, submit their certificate of graduation upon being pre-admitted, and present their original degree diploma upon registration.

2) Official transcripts. These must be original documents or notarized copies either in Chinese or English.

3) A personal statement (including a research plan: around 1500 words for the master’s degree program.

5) Two recommendation letters from professor(s) or associate professor(s) related to the applicant’s major (or equivalent professionals with relevant academic titles), either in Chinese or English. Once applicants submit the application, the application system will send an email with a link to the referees, and the referees should click the link and complete the recommendation either by filling out the form online or by uploading the scanned copy of the signed letter.

6) Original Chinese language test scores:

For Chinese-taught programs, language test scores fulfilling the following standards are eligible for submission.

HSK (Confucius Institute HSK)

Writing section (composition)

HSK 6, score of above 200

Not lower than a score of 65

Note: Qualified HSK 7-9 level scores are also accepted.

7) Information page of the valid passport (passport type must be ordinary). The expiration date of passport should be after December 2025.

8) Table of contents and abstracts of the applicant’s academic publications and any other original achievements in his/her field (if applicable).

Note: Applicants should scan the original or notarized application documents in color using a scanner. Images captured by mobile phone or camera are NOT acceptable.

Initial Review and Interview

1) The International Students Office will conduct a preliminary review of the applicants’ qualifications and application materials, and forward the materials of those who pass the preliminary review to the respective admitting departments.

2) Our School of ECE establishes an admission expert group to review the past academic performance, fundamental knowledge, and potential for development of eligible applicants based on their materials. A list of students who are qualified to participate in the second-round examination (interview) will be determined based on merit.

3) The second-round examination (interview) is tentatively scheduled to take place in March/April 2025. Once the specific format, requirements, and schedule for the second-round examination (interview) are confirmed, they will be announced on the official website of our School of ECE. Applicants need to check the relevant announcements on the website of our School of ECE in a timely manner. Members of the interview committee will independently grade on-site, by evaluating the applicants’ professional quality, research capabilities, language skills, innovative spirit, and overall quality.

Admission

1) The university conducts a comprehensive evaluation of the applicants based on their preliminary material review, interview scores, and the department’s provisional admission recommendations, selecting the best candidates to determine the provisional admission list.

2) The provisional admission list will be posted on the website of Peking University Shenzhen Graduate School as well. Applicants should check for updates.

3) The pre-admitted candidates should download and print the application form and, together with other required original application documents (except for degree diploma and recommendation letters), deliver or mail the materials to the School of Electronic and Computer Engineer, Peking University.

4) After the review and confirmation of the paper materials, the admission results will be communicated to the students. The admission documents are expected to be issued in late June 2025.

Enrollment

The specific time for new student registration will be based on the admission letter.

International students admitted to Peking University should report to the university with their passport, study visa for China, and admission letter within the specified time period. When registering for admission, new students must bring their original degree certificates for the university to review their eligibility for admission. Applicants who have obtained degree certificates from institutions outside mainland China (including Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan) should also submit the original degree certification report from the China Academic Degrees and Graduate Education Development Center (CDGDC). Those who do not meet the admission requirements will be disqualified from enrollment.

Tuition and Scholarship

The tuition fee of the Master’s program:

Chinese-taught program: RMB 33,000 Yuan per year, and RMB 99,000 Yuan in total for three years.

Admitted students may apply for one of the scholarships: Chinese Government Scholarship: full/ partial tuition waiver, free accommodation, monthly living expenses and medical insurance provided in accordance with the regulations.

Visa, Medical Insurance, and Accommodation

Admitted students must apply for a study visa at the Chinese embassy or consulate abroad with the admission letter and the “Confirmation Form for Foreign Students to Study in China” (JW201/202 form). Those who will study for more than six months are required to apply for an X1 visa, which must be changed to a residence permit for study purposes within 30 days of arrival in China.

According to the regulations of the Ministry of Education of China, international students coming to study in China must purchase medical insurance within China. Students who have not purchased the required medical insurance will not be able to complete the registration procedures.

Accommodation for international students will be arranged in accordance with the relevant regulations of Peking University Shenzhen Graduate School.

Graduation and Degree Awarding

Students who have completed all the requirements stipulated in the academic plan and passed their thesis defense upon completion of their study are permitted to graduate. After being examined and approved by the Academic Degree Assessment Committee of the university, the corresponding academic degree will be conferred.

Others

1) The university does not allow graduate students to hold two or more student statuses simultaneously.

2) Applicants should pay close attention to the relevant documents and notices issued or sent by the university and our School of ECE. The applicant themselves are responsible for any consequences arising from the applicant’s negligence of critical information or personal reasons.


3) Matters not covered herein will be executed in accordance with the relevant policies of the university.
